At the IACP 2024 conference in Boston, Chief Gault had a productive private meeting with Axon CEO Rick Smith. Their discussion centered on the evolving role of technology in public safety and the significant challenges facing law enforcement agencies today. The rapid pace of technological advancement over the past five years has created a steep learning curve for many departments. As innovative tools emerge, police agencies often struggle to understand their functionality, conceptualize their applications, and procure the right solutions. Additionally, the rising costs of these technologies pose a substantial barrier to adoption, risking a future where only well-funded agencies can afford the latest advancements. To address these challenges, it’s crucial for law enforcement leaders to advocate for increased funding, explore collaborative purchasing options, and implement cost control measures. Together, we can ensure that all agencies have access to the tools they need to enhance public safety.

It’s time to shift the conversation around policing. In Illinois, the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police (ILACP) and the NAACP have collaboratively endorsed the 10 Shared Principles. This important document emphasizes our mutual responsibility—law enforcement and community leaders alike—to promote a deeper understanding of the law among all citizens. For too long, law enforcement has maintained a stance of silence regarding our practices and decision-making processes. We often defaulted to "no comment" or withheld details out of concern for tactical security. This has contributed to a growing wave of negative perceptions about policing. Now more than ever, it’s crucial for law enforcement leaders to step forward as strong advocates for public safety. By fostering open communication and transparency, we can build trust within our communities and create a safer environment for everyone.
